Properties:
Colorless cubic crystal, white or off-white, granular, honeycomb, spheroid, irregular granular, powder.
Slightly toxic, odorless, slightly bitter taste. Extremely hygroscopic, easy to deliquescence when exposed to air. It is easily soluble in water, and its solubility is 74.5g /100g water at 20℃. Its aqueous solution is slightly acidic.
Soluble in a variety of polar and protic solvents. Solubility in the following solvents (g/100mL of solvent) at 20℃ : methanol: 29.2, anhydrous ethanol: 25.8, n-propanol: 15.8, n-butanol: 25.0, n-pentanol: 11.5, ethylene glycol: 21.6 (25℃), formic acid: 43.1, acetic acid: 15.0 (30℃), hydrazine: 16.0.
However, in dipole solvents and low polar solvents, such as diethyl ether, tetrahydrofuran, etc., only slightly soluble or insoluble. CaCl2·8NH3 and CaCl2·4C2H5OH complexes were formed by reaction with ammonia or ethanol, respectively.
At low temperature, the solution crystallizes and precipitates as hexahydrate, which gradually dissolves in its own crystalline water when heated to 30℃, gradually loses water when heated to 200℃, and then becomes dihydrate when heated to 260℃, and then becomes white porous anhydrous calcium chloride.
In the process of heating and dehydration of calcium chloride hydrate, part of hydrolysis reaction occurs, so the product often contains a small amount of CaO impurities.
